Day 417: ShiFTing in a Crisis

Empower Families First

Sometimes, people we love find themselves unexpectedly in the midst of a medical crisis.

Maybe a single mom is diagnosed with cancer

Perhaps an elderly man living a distance from his family falls and breaks his hip

Possibly it is a young couple who find out their newborn has an irreversible disease.

Empower Families First- Just another WordPress site

Empower Families First (EFF) is an organization that steps up to the plate to help in situations like these.  They are only entering their 5th year as a non-profit, but they are blazing a trail.

Here is what they do:

  • Assist families with a broad range of fundraising efforts through our 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.
  • Allow families to raise tax-exempt money to help them pay their medical bills.
  • Allows individuals and businesses to make tax-deductible donations to their cause.
  • Provide families with hospital parking vouchers, grocery gift cards, gas cards, and other in-kind support

Day 416: Some Might Call Him Crazy…

… We Call Him Majorly ShiFTy!!

How many people do you know who would write a post on Craigs List offering to help people he has NEVER met?  Well, meet this guy!  He lives in Pittsburgh and randomly chooses Chicago as his destination for ShiFTing.  While in Chicago, he helps several people.  Watch the video to find out WHO he helps and HOW he helps them…

Here is a great newspaper article on his story too! Video Shows How to Pay it Forward.

Day 415: A Ghostbuster Inspired Car and a ShiFTer

A 40 year Impact

Have you ever been stranded on the side of the road?  Ever blew a tire?  Has your car overheated

If you have ever suffered an unexpected car problem that brought your journey to a halt, I bet you wish Thomas Weller was driving by …

Day 414: A Dog and A Cactus

Tracy and Scooby say “Thanks”

Being dog owners ourselves, this story made us go “aaawwww”.  It was posted by a reader of the Ahwatukee Foothills News.  Where is that you ask?  It is in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dear Editor:

I would like to thank two couples, the Kippers and the Martins, who helped me with my dog on a recent Sunday morning.

Heading east on Chandler Boulevard, just west of the intersection at Desert Foothills Parkway, I stepped off the sidewalk to let another dog and his owner pass. Too late, I saw the blown off cactus branches, and my dog stepped on one. The Kippers helped me calm Scooby and use a shirt to dislodge the ball, but there were still a lot of needles sticking in between his pads. The Martins stopped their car in the median and drove us home.

Random acts of kindness are a blessing and I will be sure to pass on the good deeds to someone else some day.

Day 413: A Heart So Big It Could Burst

“363 days” post-retirement

This video will tell the whole story.  It is most definitely worth the click when you get to the homepage.

It might also be worth a loaf of bread, a little cheese, and some turkey too.

Day 412: ShiFTing the Consciousness of the World

Are We On Our Way?

Some of our readers are Christian, some are Muslim, some are Jewish, and the list goes on.  Whichever your beliefs are, watch this video through those eyes.  There is a beautiful message.  A message that each of us can likely find rooted in our religious or spiritual beliefs.  A message that says - we need to take care of one another.

Day 411: A 30 day Challenge to ShiFT the World

Challenging Youth to be Kind

Think Kindness is the brain child of a man named Brian Williams.  His organization is designed to inspire youth to incorporate kindness into their daily lives.

What are they doing now to spread kindness?

Four days ago  The Think Kindness organization announced they have joined with the youth of Washoe County to collect 100,000 shoes in 30 days.  What a great “feat” (yes, pun intended).  They will launch the project on March 15th.   Where will the shoes go you wonder?  Great question!  They will be brought to people in Nairobi, Kenya.  (Click here to watch a video.)

Is this organization really making a difference?  Are they ShiFTing the World

YOU be the judge!  To date:

 58,992 youth have been challenged

and

a total of 203,235 acts of kindness have been documented!

Day 410: Empty Bowls ShiFT the World

“A Grassroots Movement to Help End Hunger”

Empty Bowls (www.emptybowls.net).  Have you ever heard of this organization?  I heard of it first in St. Cloud, Minnesota several years back. What I didn’t know at the time is how Empty Bowls stretched WAY BEYOND central Minnesota.

What started out as a small event, grew into a nationwide event, which grew into a national event!  Wow!  This non-profit organization is in the business of raising money to help feed others.

“Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity.”

Chances are there will be an event somewhere in your community… click here to find out.

*If you happen to participate in an Empty Bowls event, we would love for you to return and write about it on our blog.
